FORT HANCOCK WALKING TOUR
Tour Stop 27: History House
Building Number 1
Construction Date: 1898
The History House at Gateway National Recreation Area is one of eighteen elegant houses situated along Sandy Hook Bay that were once the homes of Fort Hancock officers and their families. The house was restored by the National Park Service and is now furnished as it might have been during World War II, which was the busiest time for the fort. Visitors are welcome to come inside around during select hours. A Ranger is on hand to answer questions. The house is typically open daily from May 1st through September 30th between the hours of 10 AM to 4 PM. From October 1st through April 31st it is open on weekends only, same hours. Times can always change, so if visiting the museum is paramount to your visit to the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area, call the park at (732) 872-5916 or (732) 872-5970 and inquire about the current operating schedule.
