Fort Hancock’s Battery Peck is located near the Nine-Gun Battery in the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. To reach it, park at Lot M and start walking down the sandy trail at the end of the parking lot. The battery is a tenth of a mile down the trail. It is in deteriorating condition and closed to the public, but you can still look at it from outside the fence. The trail, by the way, is the Fishermen’s Trail. This will take you all the way to the northern tip of Sandy Hook.

Battery Peck is a small, two-gun battery that was built between 1901 and 1903. It was named after Lieutenant Fremont Peck, who was killed when a gun burst while being tested at the Sandy Hook Proving Ground in 1895. The battery was outfitted with two 6-inch M1900 guns mounted on the upper level. These were stationary, not disappearing guns like those used at many of the other batteries at Fort Hancock.

In 1943, the guns on Battery Peck were moved to Battery Gunnison. Peck was then modified into an Anti-Motor Torpedo Boat battery with two 90mm guns and had its name changed to Battery ATMB 8 Peck. It remained in operation until 1946.
