Jacob Riis Park in Queens is the main recreational park in the Jamaica Bay Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. It has the unit’s only lifeguarded swimming beach, multiple concession areas serving food and drinks, live entertainment, sports facilities, and a picnic area.
See the following web pages for information on activities at Jacob Riis Park:
Jacob Riis Park received its name in 1914, but it was a park long before that. It was renamed after the death of Jacob Riis, a proponent for the housing rights of the poor and who was instrumental in getting many of the old tenement buildings torn down and the properties turned into parks. A bust of Riis sits in front of the Bay 9 Mall. This is a 2010 replacement bust for an earlier one that was stolen in 1964.
