Sandy Hook Unit Home Page | Hiking at Sandy Hook
Length: .25 mile, round trip
Time: 10 minutes
Difficulty: Easy
The Spermaceti Cove Boardwalk in the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area leads to an observation deck overlooking the marsh area of Spermaceti Cove. It is located between Parking Lots D and E but on the other side of the road. Parking in these lots between Memorial Day and Labor Day requires a fee, but there is a small parking lot between them that is free. It is also the closest parking area to the boardwalk.
You can walk to the overlook and back in about ten minutes, but if bird watching is your goal, you might stay in the marsh for a much longer time.

For those wondering what spermaceti is, it’s not a spermicide, an Italian dish, or something you might see sprayed around in an adult movie. It’s a waxy liquid found in the skull cavity of a sperm whale that is thought to either help with the whale’s buoyancy or its echolocation. A whale can have up to 500 gallons inside its head. Back before electricity, spermaceti was a sought-after commodity because it was used to make candles that burned much brighter than other types of wax candles.
