PARK FILM

An abbreviated version of Morristown: Where America Survived is shown at the Jockey Hollow Visitor Center. About ten minutes have been cut from the original 26-minute run time, but nevertheless, this is without a doubt the best way to learn about the history of the Continental Army’s encampment at Morristown during the winter of 1779-80. The film is a live-action production with a narrator. There are a few scenes of muskets and cannon firing, but there are no developed battle scenes or deaths shown. The film is suitable for all ages.

You can watch the full version of the film at the Washington Headquarters Museum or on the Morristown Documentary web page here on National Park Planner.

EXHIBITS

A small exhibit area focuses on the lives of the enlisted men who spent the winter at Jockey Hollow. The centerpieces are a reproduction of one of their cabins and a two-minute audio program that recounts the experience of some of the soldiers. For the story of the officers at Morristown, visit the Washington Headquarters Museum and the Ford Mansion near downtown Morristown.

SCHEDULING YOUR TIME

I spent 45 minutes at the Jockey Hollow Visitor Center, with most of my time split between watching the park film and talking with a Ranger about what there is to do at the park. The exhibit area does not take long to browse through. For most people, a half hour should be enough time at the Visitor Center.
