MORRISTOWN NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK TOUR
STOP 1: WASHINGTON’S HEADQUARTERS
Allow 1.5 to 3 hours for a visit
Washington’s Headquarters is the best place to start your visit to Morristown National Historical Park. Not only is this the first stop on the official park tour, but stopping here first also makes sense geographically, for the headquarters site is located at the northern end of the park in downtown Morristown. From here you can make your way south to Jockey Hollow and not have to flip-flop back and forth in order to see all sections of the park.
The stop is comprised of two attractions: Washington’s Headquarters Museum and the Ford Mansion. The mansion, which is where George Washington stayed when the Continental Army made its winter camp in Morristown in 1779-80, can only be visited on a 45-minute guided tour. The museum is open for self exploration. It is an extensive museum that covers how wealthy people in the mid- to late 1700s lived, the American Revolution in general, and the workings of the Continental Army. There is also a room dedicated to original manuscripts written about the Revolution at the time of the Revolution. Plan to spend anywhere from a half hour to two hours at the museum, depending on your interest in the subject matter.
