The first major monument you will come to along the Battlefield Tour road at Vicksburg National Military Park is the 90 foot tall Minnesota State Memorial. This monument is made of granite and features a bronze sculpture by William Couper of the “Statue of Peace,” a woman holding a sword and shield given up by the Union and Confederate armies. The memorial was dedicated in May 1907.
