See the main Missionary Ridge page for a reservation location map.
The Sherman Reservation on Missionary Ridge in the Chattanooga Unit of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park is the largest reservation in the park, though you wouldn’t know it from the tiny pull-out parking area along the road. What you can see from the street—two cannons and a tablet—is just a small part of the reservation. This 50-acre park marks the location where General William T. Sherman attacked Confederate forces at Tunnel Hill. The Confederate successfully repelled the attack, but later retreated with the rest of the Confederate army.
Parking for the Sherman Reservation is actually on a side street, Lightfoot Mill Road, not far after you turn onto Greenwood Drive when North Crest Road ends. Signs point the way. Once parked, to get to the heart of the property you must hike straight up the same hills that Sherman took. Follow the wood-lined walkway into the forest. It is a short but steep climb—five minutes—and if you find this difficult, you probably would have been shot by your own troops if you were in the battle.

However, once on top of the hill, look down into the valley below and you will see more monuments.

Hike down the hill to see another Iowa monument and a scattering of smaller Illinois troop monuments that stretch into the woods. All told, it is a 15-20 minute round trip hike from the top of the hill to the monuments below, including time to see the monuments. For the overall visit to the reservation, plan to spend around a half hour.
