CHICKAMAUGA BATTLEFIELD TOUR
STOP 3: POE FIELD
Allow 15 minutes for a visit
The third stop on the Chickamauga Battlefield Tour is Poe Field. This spot marks the center of the Union battle line on the second day of fighting and, more importantly, the location of Union General Thomas Wood’s men when they were ordered north to “fill a gap” in the line, one that did not exist. Of course when they vacated their position a real gap was formed, a fatal mistake that directly caused the Union army to lose the battle. Wayside exhibits, cannon, and plenty of monuments are located at this stop.

In the field across Lafayette Road, which lies in front of you, is the Georgia Monument, the tallest in the park.
Allow 10-15 minutes, depending on whether you hike across Lafayette Road to get a photo of the Georgia Monument.
