The majority of the trails in the Columns Drive section of Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area’s Cochran Shoals Unit are multipurpose trails that allow both hiking and biking. There are very few Hiker Only trails. If you are afraid of getting run over by out-of-control mountain bikers, hike in the Sope Creek or Interstate North sections where Hiker Only trails make up the majority of the trail system. I hiked both the Sope Creek and Columns Drive areas during the week, and I didn’t cross paths with more than a couple mountain bikers. I’m not sure how it would be on the weekends, but I don’t see getting run over regardless of when you hike.
I have two suggestions for hikes that stay entirely within the Columns Drive section, but you are welcome to make up your own hike based on how much time you have to spend or how many miles you wish to cover. For longer hikes, combine trails from Sope Creek and Interstate North, as all three units are connected to each other.
