The Telegraph Picnic Area is one of two large picnicking spots at Prince William Forest Park. Unlike the Pine Grove Picnic Area, which is first come, first served, the pavilion at the Telegraph Picnic Area can be reserved by groups of up to forty people for family reunions, corporate outings, birthday parties, and other events. Reservations can be made up to one year in advance online at Recreation.gov or by calling (877) 444-6777. The pavilion has a dozen tables—six of which are handicap accessible—six grills, and electrical outlets. A restroom is next to the pavilion. The parking area holds 73 vehicles.

While the Telegraph Picnic Area is open year-round, the pavilion is only available for rent at select times of the year, typically from May 1st through the end of October. The exact dates change each year, and these are given on the reservation website.

Alcohol is permitted at the Telegraph Picnic Area only for those renting the pavilion. Groups up to 49 people do not require a license. Groups of 50 or more must obtain a valid ABC banquet license from the state of Virginia.

There are also another two dozen tables with grills spread throughout the woods near the pavilion. These are available to everyone on a first come, first served basis, so when reserving the facility all you get is the tables and grills at the pavilion. When the pavilion is not reserved it is available first come, first served as well. The restroom is shared by both picnic areas.

For recreation, picnickers can access The Crossing Trail, a half-mile loop that connects with other trails at the southeastern end of Prince William Forest Park. There is also a short trail that leads to the Williams Ball Field. This has a backstop and pitcher’s mound, though it is not the most level of baseball fields and is more suited for soccer and other field sports. There is also a volleyball net and horseshoe pits. According to Recreation.gov, bases, balls, horseshoes, and other sports equipment can be signed out at the Visitor Center. Keep in mind, however, that the field is open to everyone on a first come, first served basis, not just to those who reserve the pavilion.
