The Chopawamsic Backcountry Area of Prince William Forest Park is open to visitors from March 1st through November 30th. There are eight backcountry campsites accessed via the Chopawamsic Trail. You can also go fishing on the National Park Service’s side of the Breckenridge Reservoir if you have the proper Virginia fishing license.
The land in the backcountry is owned by the National Park Service, but it bulges into Quantico Marine Reservation. Because of security requirements, the government must keep track of those who enter the area, thus the need for a permit—obtain one for free at the Visitor Center during normal business hours. You will get a pass to display on your car dashboard and a key to open the gate to the backcountry parking lot on Joplin Road / Hwy 619.
If you want to get away from people, this is the place to come. In most years, less than 400 permits are issued, and that is for both campers and those who just want to hike or fish for the day. The National Park Service reports that rarely are there more than ten people in the backcountry at any given moment.
No pets are allowed in the backcountry area.
