CORINTH CIVIL WAR DRIVING TOUR STOP 5
Battery Powell was built by Union forces only a week before the Battle of Corinth on October 3-4, 1862. It was located northeast of the downtown area and manned by Company K of the 1st Missouri Light Artillery. The fort was captured by Confederate troops on the 4th but retaken by Union troops later that same day.
Nothing remains of Battery Powell. Its location is denoted by a historical marker located on Taylor Street between 3rd and 4th streets. Use 1302 Taylor Street as a GPS reference, as that’s the address of the house next to the marker. You can read it from your vehicle. If you want a photo, park on the street.
