State Memorials Map

The Tennessee State Memorial is located at the North Carolina Memorial stop on the Gettysburg Battlefield Tour (Stop 4). It stands in the area where Tennessee troops were located before they charged across the battlefield towards Union positions on Cemetery Hill during Pickett’s Charge on July 3, 1863.

As obvious from its design, the Tennessee State Memorial is a newer monument. It was dedicated in 1982 and is the last Confederate state monument erected at Gettysburg. The granite slab features three figures: an infantryman, a color bearer, and a drummer boy. These men represent the three Tennessee regiments that fought at Gettysburg. The stars on top are pink marble quarried in Knoxville.

The North Carolina State Memorial is located just one hundred yards to the south of the Tennessee monument. If you plan on photographing them, visit in the morning. Both face east and will be lit by the sun at this time. The sun will be behind the monuments in the afternoon and evening.
