Arkansas State Memorial at Gettysburg National Military Park

State Memorials Map

The Arkansas State Memorial at Gettysburg National Military Park was erected in 1966 on the site where the 3rd Arkansas Infantry—the only Arkansas regiment at Gettysburg—was positioned during the second day of fighting, July 2, 1863. At first glance it appears to be another of the rather plain Confederate state monuments on West Confederate Avenue. However, it is unique in that all four corners feature aluminum blocks with the Confederate flag engraved on them. Arkansas politicians originally wanted to cast the entire monument from aluminum, the connection being that Arkansas produces a lot of aluminum, but that was not allowed. To the best of my knowledge, it is the only monument at Gettysburg National Military Park that has an aluminum element.
