The Smithfield Beach Picnic Area (and beach facility) is open from 6 AM to 8 PM from mid-April through mid-October (parking fees are collected during this time) and from sunrise to sunset the rest of the year. All tables are taken on a first come, first served basis.
Groups of 30 or more people need a permit to use the Smithfield Beach Picnic Area. However, since the tables cannot be reserved, somebody in the group has to be there first thing in the morning to stake a claim on them. Keep in mind that the tables are spread out, so you probably need some strong friends to arrive early as well to move them to a central location. The better option is to hold your outing at the Milford Beach Picnic Area, which can be reserved. For information about permits, call the special use permit coordinator for Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area at (570) 426-2440.
While there are over three dozen picnic tables at Smithfield Beach, there are no grills. However, you can bring your own charcoal or gas grill—no ground fires are allowed. For those using charcoal, there are hot coal bins on the premises. Please dump your coals in one of these and not on the ground.
There are picnic tables at Smithfield Beach on either side of the central field and beach area. The north side (left if you are looking at the Delaware River) has approximately two dozen tables while the south side has about a dozen. Some are out in the sunshine while others are in the shade along the tree line overlooking the Delaware River. Unfortunately, there is no clear view of the river due to the trees, but you can see the water on the north side. River views on the south side are pretty much gone. Regardless, the tables along the river are the most coveted. You can also pitch a blanket anywhere and have a picnic.

Parking is done in a common parking lot, and then you must carry your picnic supplies to the tables. From the closest parking lot, the walk is roughly 100 yards.

A modern changing room and restroom facility is located in the center of Smithfield Beach near the parking lots.
