Collective Retreats offers glamping on Governors Island in New York Harbor from May through October. If you are not familiar with the term glamping, it is a portmanteau (fancy word for word blending) of glamourous and camping, usually in reference to four-walled safari-style tents with actual beds and other furnishings that are all set up when you arrive. On Governors Island you can choose between the Journey+ tent with a king or two double beds, an upgraded amenity Summit tent, or what is essentially an enclosed RV called an Outlook Shelter. Tents hold only two people (Outlook Shelters three), but families can rent a site with a kid tent for an extra fee. There are also a few larger fully-enclosed structures with glass walls on three sides that can also accommodate two people: Outlook Villa, Outlook Liberty Suite, and Outlook Panorama Suite.
Pricing is not for the squeamish, so don’t expect campground prices. Expect New York City luxury hotel prices. Depending on the day of the week and location (waterfront, non-waterfront), you might get a Journey+ tent for $350/night during the week or one of the Outlook rooms for as much as a grand. Add a few hundred more bucks for weekends and holidays. But while you may be thinking tent, you are really getting a hotel room complete with air conditioning, electricity, quality furnishings, a porch, and a view. The campground even has a restaurant and bar, and water taxi service is provided for guests who arrive outside the normal operating hours of the Governors Island ferry. The prices don’t seem to bother anyone, for I was told that the accommodations are booked solid throughout the season.
