MONOCACY NATIONAL BATTLEFIELD TOUR
STOP 5: 14th New Jersey Monument
Allow 10 minutes for a visit
The last stop on a tour of Monocacy National Battlefield is at the 14th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry Monument. The stop is located off of Urbana Pike just south of the railroad tracks that border the Best Farm. There are no hiking trails at this stop, only the monument and three wayside exhibits. The monument is a short walk from the parking lot.
The 14th New Jersey Monument was the first monument erected at Monocacy National Battlefield, having been dedicated on July 9, 1907. Of the 256 men of the 14th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry regiment, only 92 escaped the battle without serious wounds or death. The monument’s location just south of Monocacy Junction does not imply that it was these New Jersey troops who defended the junction. This is just the location that was approved for the erection of the monument.
The monument is made of granite. The column stands 17 feet tall, and the soldier on top adds another seven feet.
