Glen Echo Park Historical Buildings

The Chautauqua Tower (aka the Stone Tower) located near the original entrance to Glen Echo Park is the only remaining structure from the Chautauqua era. Built in 1891, it was originally one of two gate towers. It served as the park superintendent and security office during the amusement park years. The tower was renovated in 2008 and is now used as an art studio and gallery. The Stone Tower Gallery on the lower floor is open to visitors on Saturdays and Sundays from 12 PM to 6 PM.

Attached to the building is what is known as the Yellow Barn. The building standing today is a 2007 reproduction that is home to the Yellow Barn Painting Studio and Gallery and the SilverWorks Studio and Gallery. The original Yellow Barn was constructed in 1914 as the replacement to a stone building that was destroyed in a fire. The remains of one stone wall were incorporated into the design, but the rest of the building was made of wood. The two-story section was originally used as the park superintendent’s house, and the rest of the building was used for storage. After 1928, the Yellow Barn was the amusement park’s repair shop.
