Group Picnic Area B at Fort Washington Park is located on the left side of the main picnic area road. It is divided into four subsections—B1, B2, B3, and B4—that are strung together one after another. There is a large space between B3 and B4, so large that B4 is actually off on its own and more private. Those picnicking at the other three sites will essentially experience a picnic party atmosphere.
Shade trees at each site cover most of the picnic tables, but the areas between sites are open and exposed to the sun, including the playground area. Restrooms are located at either end, making B1 and B4 the closest to them. People from B2 and B3 will most likely use the restroom next to B1, so there will be a lot of people traipsing through the B1 picnic area. Picnic Area D shares the restroom with B4.
Playground equipment is located between B1 and B2. This is available to all visitors to Fort Washington Park, not just those renting the picnic areas.
The B and D picnic areas are separated from each other by Battery Humphreys, an artillery battery built in the 1890s. It is open for exploring, though it is not safe for little children.
The Group Picnic Areas are available from mid-April through the end of October and can be reserved up to one year in advance at Recreation.gov. A reservation is from 9 AM to sunset. Fees are typically $75 to $150, depending on the size of the picnic area you choose. Current fees are listed on Recreation.gov.
If more than one area of Picnic Area B is rented by one group or individual, it is required to contact the park at (771) 208-1555 within 48 hours for additional requirements or permits. Failure to contact the park may result in the cancellation of the reservation.
