RANGER PROGRAMS

Ranger programs are mainly conducted on an as-requested basis. The most common program is a short lecture about Saint Croix Island. While there may actually be a posted schedule, Rangers are happy to give the lecture at any time, so just ask. There are occasions where the lecture may be combined with a walk down to the Saint Croix River where you can view the island from the shore. Most Rangers can speak both English and French.

EXHIBITS

The entire section of the building that is open to visitors is not much bigger than a typical waiting room in a doctor’s office, so there are not a lot of exhibits. On the wall are three information panels that you can read, and replicas of some of the artifacts found on the island and a collection of Indian items are on display. The artifacts are from both the French and the native people who inhabited the area. There are also some castings of petroglyphs that were found near the shore. The actual petroglyphs are underwater at high tide.

SCHEDULING YOUR TIME

You can read the information panels and take a look at the artifacts in ten minutes. The Ranger lecture on the history of Saint Croix Island also takes about ten minutes, though in a one-on-one situation you may end up talking with the Ranger for much longer. Thus, plan to spend about a half hour at the Visitor Center before walking down to the river to see the island.
