I hiked a .5-mile segment of the Schooner Head Path as part of a loop hike to the summit of Acadia National Park’s Champlain Mountain via the Precipice Trail. This is the fourth leg of the journey, and it starts at the intersection with the Orange and Black Path. See the Precipice Trail Loop Hike web page here on National Park Planner for details on the hike up to this point.
Length: .5 mile
Time: 15 minutes
Difficulty: Easy
The Schooner Head Path runs from a parking lot near Dorr Point to the Schooner Head Overlook, a distance of 2.5 miles. However, I only hiked the .5-mile segment between the Orange and Black Path and Murphy’s Lane. This is one of the rare, easy hikes within Acadia National Park.
At the intersection with the Orange and Black Path, take a right and head south on Schooner Head Path, a narrow, gravel trail that runs right along Schooner Head Road for most of the way, only veering into the woods just before reaching Murphy’s Lane. Along the way it passes a wetland, but this is so filled in with vegetation that it’s hard to see the water.
Prior to reaching Murphy’s Lane is a trail on the right that looks a little overgrown, plus there is no identification sign at the intersection. All official trails within Acadia National Park have signs, so just pass it by. Murphy’s Lane, on the other hand, is identified. When you get there, take a right. It’s just a .3-mile walk back to the Precipice Trail parking lot. See the Murphy’s Lane review page here on National Park Planner to read about this section of the Precipice Trail Loop Hike.
