The blacksmith shop at Cane River Creole National Historical Park’s Magnolia Plantation is typically open on Wednesdays through Sundays from 9 AM to 3:30 PM. Inside is a forge, anvil, and other antique blacksmithing equipment.
The blacksmith shop was built in the early 1800s. It was most likely one of the first buildings constructed on the plantation since it was so important. It was here where much of the farming and construction tools, equipment, and supplies were forged and repaired.
The forge is from the early 1900s. It was built specifically for a hand-cranked blower on display to the left of the forge. Remnants of an earlier forge are underneath the existing one.
