Upon leaving the Navy and returning to Plains in 1953, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter made so little money that they had to live in government housing for the first year. The unit still exists and is marked with a plaque and wayside exhibit. It is located just down the street from Plains High School, home of the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park Visitor Center.
