PARK OVERVIEW
Visiting Castillo de San Marcos National Monument is a self-guided experience. Unlike many National Park facilities, there is no separate Visitor Center. All of the park’s attractions and activities are located inside the fort, and Rangers are on hand—sometimes in period costume—to answer questions. There is a charge to enter, and a pay booth sits near the fort’s entrance. In addition to paying your entrance fee at the booth, you can ask questions about your visit and get a park brochure. While attendance is highest in the summer, and even higher on summer weekends, there is no reason to fear a crowd (unless you just don’t like crowds), as there are no tours that can fill up or other activities that require waiting in line.
Castillo de San Marcos consists of the fort, the grounds around the fort, a book/souvenir shop, and museum exhibits that are housed in the many storerooms on the fort’s lower level. There are no picnic facilities, nor is camping allowed in the park. There is a parking lot for the fort, but it fills up during busy times (there is a parking fee) and only accommodates vehicles shorter than 21 feet. If you can’t find a spot, there is a city-run parking lot a ten-minute walk from the fort (larger vehicles can park here). It is located at 10 West Castillo Drive. Look for the brown St. Augustine Visitor Center and Parking sign.
OPERATING HOURS
Castillo de San Marcos National Monument is open daily 9 AM to 5:15 PM, except when closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas days. Last admission is 5 PM, so you’d only get fifteen minutes to see the fort if you come at that time. The grounds outside the fort are open daily from 5:30 AM until midnight. Times can always change, so before making travel plans be sure to check the official Castillo de San Marcos Operating Hours and Seasons web page for the latest schedule.
FEES
There is a fee to enter Castillo de San Marcos National Monument. Cash is no longer accepted—credit or debit cards only. For the latest prices, check the park’s Fees and Passes web page.
