Located near Greenwood, South Carolina, the town of Ninety Six first served as a South Carolina backcountry trading post between the British colonists and the Cherokee Indians, but went on to fame as the site of the first major battle of the American Revolution to be fought in the southern colonies. The fight was not between revolutionary colonists (Patriots) and the British army, but between Patriots and other colonists loyal to England (Loyalists). After the battle, the town was burned to the ground and abandoned. The current town of Ninety Six, South Carolina, is not the same as the historic town commemorated by the National Historic Site, though it is just two miles away.
