Complete information about visiting the Wright Brothers National Memorial is now available on National Park Planner.
Located on Bodie Island (pronounced “Body”), part of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, the Wright Brothers National Memorial commemorates the first manned, controlled, and powered air flight of a heavier-than-air machine (not a balloon) on December 17, 1903, by aviators Orville and Wilbur Wright. Though associated with the town of Kitty Hawk, the Wrights took their first flight about four miles south in what is now the town of Kill Devil Hills. This town was only incorporated in 1953, thus Kitty Hawk was the town credited as the location of the first powered flight.
