Stones River National Battlefield | BRAGG HEADQUARTERS

Bragg Headquarters marker

Confederate General Braxton Bragg’s Headquarters Site is actually Bragg’s second headquarters site. I am not sure where the first was located, but most likely it’s now under a shopping mall. Typical of monuments erected on Civil War battlefield headquarters sites, the Bragg’s Headquarters is marked with a monument of cannonballs stacked into a pyramid. Other than taking a photo, there’s not much else to do. This stop is for the true Civil War fanatic.

The headquarters site is located just south of the battlefield on Old Nashville Highway, but to get to it you must drive past the site and wind your way back on a side road. From the Stones River National Battlefield Visitor Center, exit onto Old Nashville Highway and turn right. Stay on Old Nashville until it becomes West College Street and crosses the railroad tracks, then take your first left. Pass by the Murfreesboro Bark Park and its parking lot and continue down the road until you come to a second parking lot, this one being quite large. You will actually pass the Bragg Headquarters site on your right just before coming to the parking lot, so park your car in the first spot you can get and then walk back to the headquarters site.

At the far end of the parking lot towards a pavilion is an information panel about Bragg and the fighting at McFadden’s Farm and McFadden’s Ford. This panel was put up by the Tennessee Civil War National Heritage Area, which is sponsored by the National Park Service.
