SHILOH BATTLEFIELD TOUR STOP #8
After encountering the 9,000 Confederate troops that marched out of the woods at Fraley Field, Major James Powell’s men turned at fled back towards Colonel Peabody’s camp (where they originated from). A messenger had proceeded the men and informed Peabody of the oncoming Confederates. Peabody sounded the alarm, again without conferring with his commander, General Prentiss. When Prentiss arrived he publicly blamed Peabody for starting the battle; Peabody took full responsibility.
This stop on the battlefield tour of Shiloh National Military Park marks the point where Powell’s men were joined by the rest of Peabody’s men and proceeded to form a defensive line west of the Eastern Corinth Road. Prentiss’s second brigade formed a line to the east of the road. Together, about 5,400 Union troops formed a battle line two-thirds of a mile long, east to west. However, nothing could stop the Confederate onslaught, and the Union soldiers soon retreated back to their camps.
There is nothing to see at this stop other than an information panel that explains what took place at this location.
