Memorial to General Johnston at Shiloh National Military Park

Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston died near this location on the Shiloh battlefield around 2:45 PM on April 6th. He was struck below the right knee by a bullet that severed an artery and died a few minutes later. Johnston was the highest ranking officer on either side to die in the Civil War. General Pierre Beauregard became commander of the Southern Army after Johnston’s death.
