See the Picnic Areas web page for an interactive location map.

Varnum’s Picnic Area is located across the street from the Varnum’s Quarters stop on the Valley Forge Encampment Tour. Here you will find a dozen picnic tables (no grills) located in a wooded area. The place is huge, so there is plenty of room between tables. The picnic area has its own parking lot, and there is a modern restroom and garbage cans.

All tables are taken on a first come, first served basis. Groups of more than 20 people must picnic either here or at the Wayne’s Woods Picnic Area or the Betzwood Picnic Area. Furthermore, groups of more than 30 people need a permit. This is a permit for having a large group at the park, not specifically for picnicking. It does not include a picnic area reservation, so somebody from the group must still show up early enough to grab tables before other people get them. For more information, visit the National Park Service’s Permits and Reservations web page for Valley Forge National Historical Park.

Varnum’s Picnic Area is open daily from March through October and on weekends only in November. It is closed from December through February.
