The Johnstown Flood National Memorial has a large picnic area located near the south side of the dam. You cannot reach this side by foot from the Visitor Center, so you must drive to it. To get there, assuming you are starting at the Visitor Center, exit the parking lot and turn left on Lake Road. You will first pass a parking area to access the North Abutment of the dam. Continue on Lake Road until it dead ends into Locust Street, then take a right. This will bring you through the town of St. Michael where the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club’s cottages and clubhouse are located. Stay on Locust Street until coming to South Abutment Road and then take a right. Shortly thereafter you will come to Picnic Area Road on the left. The picnic area is a short distance up this road.

The shaded picnic area has a covered pavilion and approximately 17 tables and 10 grills. One table next to the road is reserved for disabled visitors, though most all tables are near the parking lot, so you don’t have far to carry your provisions. All tables are taken on a first come, first served basis. There is also a fancy outhouse, which is what I call a chemical toilet in a permanent building versus the plastic portable toilets you see at construction sites.
