A large picnic area and modern restroom facility are located at the main parking lot for Friendship Hill National Historic Site. The picnic area has ten tables, two of which are under a pavilion. There are six grills available, four next to the individual tables and two next to the pavilion. Not every table has its own grill.
Except for the two under the pavilion, the picnic tables are out in the open on a manicured grass field that skirts a wooded area. Tables near the trees will benefit from some shade when the sun is at the right angle, while others are exposed to the sun at all times.
A paved path from the parking lot connects to one of the individual picnic tables, the pavilion, and the restroom, making these wheelchair accessible.
All tables are taken on a first come, first served basis and cannot be reserved. Groups can still picnic at Friendship Hill, but there are a few things to consider. One, somebody has to show up early and get the tables. Two, each table is situated on a cement pad and is anchored to the ground, so there is no way to move them together to accommodate a large group, at least if you want the entire group to sit together. And three, groups using the picnic area may be required to obtain a permit. For more information, see the National Park Service’s official Permits web page for Friendship Hill National Historic Site. Note that a permit does not guarantee use of the tables and grills, so you still have to show up early.
