There are picnic areas at the Mound City Group, Hopewell Mound Group, Seip Earthworks, and Hopeton Earthworks units of Hopewell Culture National Historical Park. None of them have grills, and no fires of any type are allowed within the park. This includes gas grills.
All tables are taken on a first come, first served basis. No reservations can be made. You can still hold an event at the park, but somebody in your party must arrive early to stake a claim on the tables. With the ban on grilling, ultimately Hopewell Culture National Historical Park is not the ideal place to hold any type of significant group event. Furthermore, if you have a group of 25 or more people, you need a permit to gather at the park. For more information call (740) 774-1125.
MOUND CITY GROUP PICNIC AREA
There is one picnic table for disabled visitors just outside the front door of the Mound City Group Visitor Center. However, the majority of the tables—a dozen—are located in the woods on the north side of the building at the trailhead for the Mound City Nature Trail.
HOPETON EARTHWORKS PICNIC AREA
There are three picnic tables next to the parking lot for the Hopeton Earthworks.
HOPEWELL MOUND GROUP PICNIC AREA
The Hopewell Mound Group has a covered pavilion with nine tables. There is also a modern restroom facility and drinking fountain.
SEIP EARTHWORKS PICNIC AREA
There are a few picnic tables at Seip Earthworks along a short road that leads out to the old Seip Farmhouse, but most of the tables are located in a covered pavilion next to the parking lot. There are five standard tables and one that can accommodate wheelchairs.
