Franklin Roosevelt had made it clear that when he died, he wanted to be buried in the garden of his home at Hyde Park, Springwood, which is now part of Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site. He even designed his own grave marker, a marble block eight feet long, four feet wide, and three feet tall with nothing but his name and the years of his birth and death. Upon Eleanor’s death, this same information about her was to be added to the inscription.

The monument now sits in the center of what is known as the Rose Garden and is surrounded by a manicured grass field, flowers of all sorts, and a hemlock-hedge wall that was planted by his mother in 1912. A paved sidewalk that covers level ground leads from the Visitor Center parking lot to the garden. There are multiple entrances through the hedges.
