STOP 3

The third stop on Boston’s Black Heritage Trail is the Phillips School on the corner of Pinckney and Anderson streets. The building was constructed in 1824 and originally served as a whites-only school house. It became integrated when Massachusetts banned segregation in 1855. Prior to this, black children attended school at the African Meeting House, and starting in 1835, at the Abiel Smith School.

Today the Phillips School is a private residence.
