A large picnic area with approximately two dozen tables—no grills—is located on the west side of Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shine. All tables are taken on a first come, first served basis. This is a picnic area for park guests, not the type of picnic area where you would hold a birthday party or other large event, though there is nothing stopping you from doing so.

The Fort McHenry picnic area has to be one of the worst placed picnic areas that I have ever come across. It’s almost as if they don’t want you to picnic. It’s not located near the fort or even near the Visitor Center. To reach it you must hike about .3 mile from the Visitor Center parking lot along Constellation Plaza until you come to a paved walkway that branches off the road to your left and heads towards a large statue of Orpheus. Follow the path until you reach the tables. You can also get to it from the fort by hiking on the same paved path that follows the river, except you would be coming from the opposite direction. The tables are about .4 mile from the fort.
