Length: .6 mile, one-way
Time: 15 minutes, one-way
Difficulty: Easy

The Picnic Area Trail runs from the Fort Pulaski National Monument Visitor Center to the Picnic Area. While it is possible to drive to the picnic area, those who want to work up an appetite prior to eating or burn off some calories afterwards can walk this easy, .6-mile trail. The trail does not pass any historical areas and simply serves the purpose of connecting the two aforementioned points. You would not hike or bike this trail unless you wanted to have a picnic.

The hike begins at the forest at the far end of the Fort Pulaski parking lot (opposite from the Visitor Center). This is actually the start of the North Pier Trail, but walk a hundred yards down the paved path and you will come to a 4-way intersection. The Picnic Area Trail starts here on the left. Signs clearly mark the direction.

The Picnic Area Trail starts off paved, but after a couple minutes the pavement ends and the trail becomes a hard-packed gravel and sand path. A person in a wheelchair could make it with a little help. Once you get close to the picnic area, the pavement reappears. In fact, traces of asphalt can be found the entire way, so the trail must have been paved completely at one time.

The trail crosses the Dike System Trail and eventually comes out on the opposite side of the road from the picnic area. There’s not much more to it.
