Fishing is allowed within Fort Pulaski National Monument, which includes both Cockspur and McQueens islands. No special permit is required from the National Park Service, but you do need the appropriate Georgia fishing license. Oyster harvesting in Oyster Creek and crabbing are subject to standard Georgia rules and regulations. No crab traps are allowed unattended within the park.
If you can get to the water anywhere on Cockspur Island—except for the moat, canals, and dike system at the fort—you can go fishing. A popular spot is the bridge between Cockspur and McQueens islands. Fishing from the bridge is allowed before 8:30 AM and after 5 PM. You can also fish any time during daylight hours from the shore just below the abutments on either end of the bridge. There is a parking area before the park pay station that is accessible without a fee.
A popular spot on Cockspur Island is the West End Fishing Spot. Once you get over the bridge and onto the island, take the first left (Tybee Coast Guard Station Drive) and then the first right (half-mile drive) to the gravel parking lot. Because this is within the gated area of the park, it is only open from 9 AM to 5 PM, standard park operating hours. Entrance fees also apply.
A third spot is the fishing pier on Lazaretto Creek near the bridge to Tybee Island. If you are heading towards Tybee on Highway 80, be on the lookout for a side road on the right a half mile after you pass the entrance to Fort Pulaski. A boat ramp and parking area are located as soon as you turn off the highway, and the fishing pier is .4 mile farther down the road. Fishing is allowed from dawn to dusk from the pier only. DO NOT FISH on the boat dock.
Those with a boat, motorized or hand-paddled, can fish in the creeks that weave in and out of McQueens Island. Use the Lazaretto Creek boat ramp as your launch point.
