Saturiwa Trail / Fort George Road on Fort George Island

The Saturiwa Trail on Fort George Island is named after Chief Saturiwa, the leader of the tribe that first encountered Jean Ribault and his fellow French explorers in 1562. The trail is nothing more than Fort George Road, and it is open to vehicles, bikers, and hikers. It is paved up until the Ribault Club (the park’s visitor center), then becomes dirt shortly after passing the building. A website-based audio tour that you can listen to on your cell phone provides information and is a great way to learn about the history and the environment of Fort George Island. Total distance is 4.4 miles. If interested, visit the Saturiaw Trail web page using your cell phone browser. If you forget the URL, ask for it at the Ribault Club.

Stops along the road correspond to audio tour segments. Most stops discuss structures that once stood or habitats that once flourished. Other than the Ribault Club, the ruins of a tabby-constructed house, and a short trail to Point Isabel where the Ribault Club marina once was, there is not a lot to actually get out and see. The tour takes roughly one hour to complete by vehicle, not counting stopping at the Ribault Club (30 minutes) or walking to Point Isabel (30-minute round trip walk).
