The Visitor Center for President William Jefferson Clinton Birthplace Home National Historic Site is located just around the corner from the Clinton Birthplace Home. The building originated as a bungalow-style residential home that was built sometime between 1913 and 1919. It was acquired by the Clinton Birthplace Foundation in early 1996 and opened to the public on June 1, 1997.

OPERATING HOURS

The Visitor Center is open year-round on Fridays through Wednesdays (closed Thursdays) from 9 AM to 4:30 PM. Keep in mind that times can always change, so be sure to get the current schedule on the National Park Service’s official Operating Hours and Seasons web page for President William Jefferson Clinton Birthplace Home National Historic Site.

PARK FILM

The 22-minute film From Hope to History: President Bill Clinton’s Early Years tells the story of Clinton’s first four years of life living with his grandparents in Hope, Arkansas. Through narration and interviews with Clinton and some of his childhood friends (one who was his first Chief of Staff when he became president), viewers learn about the early life lessons that shaped him.

The exhibit area at the Visitor Center is literally just a small space in a back room where maybe four people can comfortably stand. It consists of five information panels about Bill Clinton’s family and childhood friends and a touchscreen kiosk on which visitors can watch various short films about memorable moments in Clinton’s life.

VIRGINIA CLINTON KELLY MEMORIAL GARDEN

The Virginia Clinton Kelley Memorial Garden, President William Jefferson Clinton Birthplace Home National Historic Site

The Virginia Clinton Kelley Memorial Garden is located between the Visitor Center and the birthplace home. It is named for Clinton’s mother, Virginia. She was married four times, and Kelly is her fourth husband’s surname. She was a fanatical gardener who loved roses—and roses are indeed planted in the garden. There is also a hybrid crape myrtle called Hope that was developed by the University of Arkansas Department of Horticulture. The memorial garden is open daily from sunrise to sunset.

SCHEDULING YOUR TIME

Plan to spend 30 to 45 minutes at the Visitor Center. This gives you enough time to watch the park film, check out the small exhibit area, and talk with a Ranger about what there is to see and do at the park.
