Complete information on visiting the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site is now on National Park Planner.

Located on Roanoke Island, part of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site marks the spot of the first English colony in North America, though it was not successful. In 1587, the third of three expeditions brought families the area. When supplies began running low and troubles with the Indians were on the rise, the leader of the colony, John White, returned to England for help and supplies. It would be three years before he could finance a return trip. When he arrived, every colonist had vanished without a trace. It is one of the New World’s greatest mysteries, unsolved to this day.
