Two fountains, known as the Haupt Fountains, flank a walkway leading from Constitution Avenue to the Ellipse, halfway between 15th and 17th Streets. The fountains were the idea of Lady Bird Johnson and were funded by a donation from Enid Haupt, a publisher most noted for Seventeen Magazine. She often donated to promote horticulture and historic preservation. The fountains are made from 18 square foot slabs of granite a foot thick and were sculpted by Gordon Newell. Installation was done in 1968.
