HISTORIC JACKSON WARD WALKING TOUR
STOP 6: SIXTH MOUNT ZION BAPTIST CHURCH
See the Jackson Ward Walking Tour web page for an interactive map of tour stop locations.
14 West Duval Street
As you continue down Jackson Street and cross St. James Street, you will come to a large, open field with a church on the far side. This is the Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church, which was founded in 1867 by Reverend John Jasper. This is not the congregation’s original location; it moved here in 1869. The current building was constructed in the late 1880s. Unless you want a closer look at the church, the view from Jackson Street should suffice.
If you look carefully just after crossing St. James Street, to the right of the church, but farther in the distance, is a four story building, St. Luke Hall. This was the first location of Maggie Walker’s St. Luke Penny Savings Bank when it was formed in 1903.
