212 East Leigh Street

Started by Alfred Price in the 1880s, the A. D. Price Funeral Establishment and its funeral supply business was the largest such black-owned business of its time. Price operated his funeral home and warehouse for wholesale funeral home supplies out of a building located near the corner of 3rd and East Leigh Streets. You will see the words A. D. Price stamped into the concrete sidewalk in front of the building.

Price was one of the largest real estate owners in Richmond and served on the board of many companies, including Maggie Walker’s St. Luke Penny Savings Bank. After his death in 1921, his son Alfred Jr. ran the businesses, which remained in the Price family until being purchased by Fenton Bland, a Virginia delegate. Bland committed bank fraud and was sentenced to five years in prison in 2005. IBI Enterprises acquired the business from the bankrupt Bland, then sold it to mortician Carl Eggleston in 2008. As of 2014, the A. D. Price Funeral Establishment was out of business.

The building is currently an apartment building.
