Harriet Tubman House and Barn, Harriet Tubman National Historical Park

PARK OVERVIEW

Harriet Tubman National Historical Park is located in Auburn, New York. The park includes two different historical sites located less than two miles apart: Thompson Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church and the Harriet Tubman Home. The church and the adjacent parsonage, which is used as a visitor center, are owned and operated by the National Park Service. The Harriet Tubman Home includes the actual Tubman house, the Home for the Aged, and a visitor center with a museum dedicated to Tubman and her contributions to the community in her later life. It is owned and operated by the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church and managed by the non-profit The Harriet Tubman Home, Inc. This organization works in partnership with the National Park Service. (While Tubman is best associated with her abolitionist work and the Underground Railroad, this is not the focus of the park.)

Harriet Tubman resided on South Street in Auburn from 1859 until her death in 1913. She established the Home for the Aged in the late 1890s to take care of elderly and indigent African Americans. Currently, the house is under renovation and not open to the public, but visitors can still tour the Home for the Aged.

Also part of the park is the Thompson Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church. This is the church Tubman helped build and attended when she lived in Auburn. The parsonage next door is used as the National Park Service’s visitor center. There is a small exhibit area inside with more about Tubman’s life in Auburn.

Though not officially part of the park, visitors are encouraged to stop by the Fort Hill Cemetery where Harriet Tubman is buried.
