The Capulin Volcano National Monument Picnic Area is located one mile past the Visitor Center on Volcano Road. While the park is open from dawn to dusk, Volcano Road is only open to vehicles between 8:30 AM and 4 PM, so plan your picnicking activities accordingly.
The Picnic Area consists of twelve tables (no grills) scattered around the parking lot. Aside from two that are out in the open on a cement pad next to the handicapped parking, most of the tables are in shaded areas.
There are a few tables grouped together, but most are situated by themselves, some in out-of-the-way places. The picnic area is geared more for people who just want to have a bite to eat while visiting the park, not for those looking for a place to hold a group event such as a birthday party or a family reunion. Also, all tables are taken on a first-come, first-served basis, so if you do want to have a small event, you must arrive early to stake your claim.
All of the picnic tables are newer and made of metal, so you don’t have to worry about getting splinters in your behind from sitting on an old, dilapidated wooden table. There is also a modern restroom and a water bottle filling station, but keep in mind both are open seasonally, so they may not be available when you visit.
After enjoying your picnic, you can burn some calories by hiking the Boca Trail or the Lava Flow Trail, both of which are accessible from the parking lot.
