When you are driving down Highway 370 from the Mississippi’s Final Stands Interpretive Center towards the Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield Site, be on the lookout on your left for a monument accessed by a circular driveway. It is located just before coming to Brice’s Crossroads and the park property.
I have no idea who erected the monument or what its ultimate purpose is, but inscribed on its four sides are the names of the Mississippi counties that were created by land ceded to the United States government by the Chickasaw Indians in 1832: Tishomingo, Tippah, Itawamba, and Pontotoc counties. There are also three wayside exhibits at the site. One discusses the treaty between the Chickasaw and the United States; another the growth of the area after the treaty; and the third the Battle of Brices Cross Roads.
