LOCATION

The Park Street Church, part of Boston National Historical Park, is located at 1 Park Street (corner of Park and Tremont streets).

VISITING PARK STREET CHURCH

Park Street Church is an active Congregational church that is also a stop on the Freedom Trail®, though it really has nothing to do with the American Revolution—it wasn’t even built until 1809. It is on the site of the Granary Burying Ground, a cemetery much older than the church; there is no affiliation between the two. Both are within eyesight of Boston Common.

Operating hours are typically Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9:30 AM to 3 PM, but only in July and August. It is also open on Sundays year-round. When open, a sign will be displayed on the front staircase. There is no fee to enter, but donations are welcome. For more information, visit the Park Street Church website.

No tours of the church are given, so all you can do is take a look inside. There are a few information panels about the organ and the church’s first organist, Lowell Mason, a man credited as the Father of American Church Music. He wrote more than 1,500 hymns, including the music set to the poems Nearer My God to Thee (Sarah Flower Adams) and Joy to the World (Isaacc Watts).
