Main Hampton Mansion Tour Page
The Drawing Room at Hampton Mansion is located in the northwest corner of the first floor. It is decorated as it might have been between 1830 and 1860 when the third owners of the estate, John and Eliza Ridgely, lived in the mansion. Because this was the room where guests were received and entertained, it was by far the most important room in the house and was furnished lavishly by all owners. Today it is often referred to as Eliza’s Parlor because every item in the room was purchased by her from the 1830s through the 1850s.
Eliza is probably the most popular of the Ridgely women. She was responsible for turning the gardens into some of the most renowned in the country, and during her many trips to Europe she brought back lots of furnishings. In fact, many of the furniture and decorations in the house were purchased by her.
Note: A drawing room is not a place where you went to draw. It is the room where you withdrew to after greeting guests at the door.
